The Netherlands has a strong environmental tradition, a legacy in part of its being one of the most densely populated states in the world. NGOs such as Greenpeace are well supported and the Green Party is well represented in parliament. The Dutch recycle their domestic trash and have a good record of energy conservation.
The main concerns are halting highway building, and the proposed high-speed TGV train. The government plans that this will cross the green heartland of the Netherlands, an area known as the Randstad. It is being strongly opposed by environmentalists, who succeeded in halting a second airport north of Rotterdam.
